Jaisalmer is the only living fort city left in India, and it is roughly a day’s drive from Ahmedabad. That combination — extraordinary, and reachable without a flight — makes western Rajasthan the best long-weekend-plus trip available to travellers from Gujarat.

It is also a trip with a narrow season and one piece of timing that decides whether the desert night is magical or merely uncomfortable.

The season is short. Respect it.

The route from Ahmedabad

The natural loop runs Ahmedabad — Mount Abu or Jodhpur — Jaisalmer — back. Six days is comfortable; five works.

The timing that matters

Reach the desert camp before sunset, not after dark. The camel or jeep ride onto the dunes, the sunset over the sand and the evening folk performance are the entire point of the night, and arriving late means you pay for a tent and miss the reason you came.

Work backwards: sunset in December is around 5:45 pm, so leave Jaisalmer town by about 3:30 pm. Every operator knows this and a surprising number still schedule it badly.

Mehrangarh deserves more time than it is given

Mehrangarh is, by a distance, the best-preserved and best-presented fort in Rajasthan. The audio guide is genuinely excellent and included with the ticket. Most itineraries allow ninety minutes; allow three hours.

Go at opening time. By eleven the courtyards are full and hot, and the views over the blue city are best in the morning light anyway.

Choosing a desert camp

Camps at Sam and Khuri range from bare tents to properties with attached bathrooms, proper beds and heating. The difference is significant on a December night.

What to skip, honestly

Frequently asked questions

How far is Jaisalmer from Ahmedabad?

Roughly 12 to 13 hours by road directly, which is why almost everyone breaks the journey at Jodhpur or Mount Abu. There are also overnight train options that save you a driving day in each direction.

How many days do you need for Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?

Six days from Ahmedabad is comfortable. Five is workable using an overnight train on the outbound leg. Four means seeing the forts and missing the desert, which defeats the purpose.

Is one night in a desert camp enough?

Yes. One night is the experience; two nights in the same camp is usually one night too many unless you specifically want to switch off completely.

Is Jaisalmer safe for families and solo women travellers?

Generally yes. It is a small, heavily touristed town and the usual precautions apply — book camps and guides through a known operator rather than through touts at the fort gate, and agree prices in advance.
