Two couples can fly to Maldives on the same day, stay the same number of nights, and pay wildly different amounts — without one of them having been overcharged. The Maldives is not one price bracket. It is at least three, and the gap between them is decided by a choice most travellers make without realising they are making it.

That choice is the transfer. Get it right and Maldives is achievable on a normal honeymoon budget. Get it wrong and you add a large, non-negotiable sum before you have eaten a single meal.

The visa: genuinely the easiest part

Indian passport holders receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Malé. There is no application, no fee and no paperwork to file in advance. Requirements are straightforward:

The one thing you must do beforehand is the Maldives Traveller Declaration (IMUGA). It is free, online, and must be submitted within 96 hours before arrival. Departing travellers file it again. It takes a few minutes and is the only pre-arrival step, so do not let it be the thing that catches you out.

The three price brackets, explained

1. Local island guesthouses — the budget bracket

Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo and others are inhabited local islands with guesthouses rather than resorts. You reach them by public ferry or shared speedboat, which costs a fraction of a seaplane.

What you get: the same extraordinary water, excellent snorkelling and diving, sandbank trips and dolphin cruises, at perhaps a quarter of resort prices. What you accept: these are Muslim communities, so alcohol is not served on the island and modest dress is expected away from the designated “bikini beach”. Rooms are simple guesthouse rooms.

For couples who want the Maldives for the ocean rather than the marketing, this bracket is genuinely underrated.

2. Speedboat-transfer resorts — the sweet spot

Private resort islands close enough to Malé to be reached by speedboat, usually within about 30 to 60 minutes. You get the full resort experience — private island, alcohol, water villas, spa — without the seaplane cost.

This is where most honeymoon budgets are best spent, and where we place most couples.

3. Seaplane-transfer resorts — the premium bracket

The far atolls, the famous names, the photographs. The seaplane is a spectacular experience and a substantial per-person round-trip cost on top of the room rate.

Two things nobody mentions: seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a late-arriving international flight can force a paid overnight in Malé at your own cost; and there is a strict baggage limit, with excess charged by weight.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Maldives?

No advance visa. Indian passport holders get a free 30-day visa on arrival. You must complete the free online IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, and again before departure.

How many days are enough for a Maldives honeymoon?

Four to five nights. The Maldives is a single-location trip and there is little to do beyond the island and the water, which is precisely the appeal. Beyond six or seven nights, most couples want a change of scene.

Is Maldives cheaper than Bali?

The flight is usually cheaper and shorter from India. On the ground, a resort island is significantly more expensive than Bali because you are captive to one property. A local-island Maldives trip, however, can cost less than a mid-range Bali trip.

What is the cheapest time to visit Maldives from India?

May to November, the wet season, when resort rates drop substantially. The best weather is December to April, which is also when it costs the most.

Planning a Maldives honeymoon from Gujarat?

Anjani Tourism arranges Maldives honeymoons for couples from Ahmedabad, Botad and across Gujarat — with the transfer type, meal plan and taxes stated plainly in the quote, so the number you see is the number you pay.
