Thailand is the trip most Gujarati families take first when they travel abroad, and in 2026 it comes with a moving part most travellers do not know about. The visa-free entry arrangement for Indian passport holders is mid-revision, and which rule applies to you depends on the day you land — not the day you book.

This guide sets out the position as it stands in August 2026, what it means practically, and what a Thailand trip from Ahmedabad actually costs once you stop reading headline package prices.

The visa position, stated plainly

Indian passport holders have been entering Thailand visa-free for tourism, with a 60-day stamp on arrival, no fee and no pre-approval. In May 2026 the Thai Cabinet approved ending that 60-day arrangement, and in July 2026 approved a revised framework placing India on a 30-day visa-free list instead.

The important detail: as of mid-August 2026 the implementing announcement had not been published in the Royal Gazette, so arrivals were still receiving the 60-day stamp. The change takes effect when it is gazetted, which can happen with very little notice.

What this means for you in practice:

Visa exemption also does not mean no requirements. Immigration can ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and evidence of adequate funds. These are checked inconsistently, which is exactly why people get caught out — the one time it is checked is the time you do not have it.

What a Thailand trip from Ahmedabad actually costs

Package headline prices are usually land-only and twin-sharing. The real number is built from these parts:

The costs people forget

Where to actually go, for a first trip

Bangkok — two nights, not five

The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and a river boat fill a good day and a half. Bangkok is hot, enormous and heavy on traffic; most first-time visitors are ready to move on after two nights.

Phuket — the easy beach

The most connected island, the widest hotel range, and the easiest with children or elderly parents. Patong is busy and loud; Karon, Kata and Bang Tao are calmer, and where we usually place families.

Krabi — the better-looking one

Limestone cliffs, Railay, quieter beaches. Slightly harder to reach and slightly less to do in the evenings, which for many couples is the point.

Pattaya — go in knowing what it is

Close to Bangkok and inexpensive, which is why it appears in so many cheap packages. Its nightlife reputation is earned. Families are usually happier on Coral Island or at Nong Nooch Garden than on Walking Street.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Thailand in 2026?

Indian passport holders currently enter visa-free for tourism. The stamp length is in transition from 60 days to 30 days, and the rule in force on your arrival date is the one that applies. For a standard holiday either is more than sufficient. Confirm with the Thai Immigration Bureau or the Royal Thai Embassy shortly before you travel.

How many days do you need in Thailand?

Six to seven nights is the sweet spot — two in Bangkok and four or five on one island. Adding a second island to a week-long trip means spending a day of it on a ferry.

What is the cheapest month to visit Thailand from India?

Generally the monsoon months from June to September, when both air fares and hotel rates soften. The trade-off is that Andaman-side boat trips are cancelled more often, so build in flexibility.

Is Thailand safe for a family holiday?

Yes, and it is one of the most family-comfortable international destinations for Indian travellers — short flights, good hospitals in the main centres, widely spoken English in tourist areas, and easy vegetarian food if you plan for it. Ordinary caution around scams, jet-ski deposits and street tour touts applies.
