Kashmir is not one destination — it is four or five quite different ones, depending entirely on the month you arrive. The same six-day itinerary that shows you tulips in April shows you bare brown hillsides in November, and the Gulmarg meadow that is a wildflower carpet in July is under two metres of snow in January.

Almost every disappointed Kashmir trip we hear about comes down to one of two things: the traveller picked the wrong month for what they wanted to see, or the route was ordered badly and burned two days in the car. Both are avoidable.

When should you actually go?

March to early May — blossom and tulips

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for roughly three to four weeks, usually from late March into mid-April. Exact dates shift every year with the weather and are announced only a week or two ahead, so if the tulips are the point of your trip, build the rest of the itinerary to be flexible around them. Almond and cherry blossom run slightly earlier. Days are cool, evenings genuinely cold.

Mid-May to June — the safe, green choice

This is the window most families from Gujarat should pick. Everything is open, the meadows at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are green, the passes are clear, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the low twenties. It is also the busiest and most expensive stretch, and houseboat and hotel inventory in Srinagar genuinely runs out. Book six to eight weeks ahead.

July to August — the monsoon caveat

Kashmir gets far less rain than Gujarat does in these months, so it remains a reasonable escape from a Gujarati monsoon. The risk is not rain in Srinagar but landslides on the mountain roads, which can close the Sonamarg and Gulmarg approaches for a day at a time. Perfectly workable, but do not plan a same-day flight connection after a mountain excursion.

September to October — the underrated one

Our honest favourite. The crowds thin, the light is extraordinary, the chinar trees turn red and gold through late October, and the prices drop meaningfully from the June peak. Nights get cold quickly. If you are travelling as a couple rather than with young children, this is the window to ask about.

November to February — snow, with conditions

If you want snow you can walk in, this is the only window that reliably delivers it. Gulmarg is the centre of it, and the Gondola is the main draw. Two honest warnings: the Gondola closes without notice in bad weather or high wind and no operator can guarantee it, and the Srinagar–Gulmarg road can require chains. Budget a spare day.

The routing mistake that costs two days

The three big day trips from Srinagar — Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg — lie in three different directions. Travellers who do them as three separate returns from Srinagar spend six to eight hours a day in the car and see very little.

A better shape for a six-day trip:

If you only have four or five days, drop Sonamarg rather than compressing the others. It is the longest drive and the most weather-dependent.

What a Kashmir package from Ahmedabad actually costs

Prices move with season and fuel, so treat these as the shape of the cost rather than a quotation. For a six-day, five-night trip on twin-sharing:

Peak-season supplements around mid-May to June, and around Christmas and New Year, are real and can add substantially to hotel rates. A quote that ignores them is not cheaper — it is incomplete.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Kashmir?

Six days and five nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without rushing. Five days works if you drop Sonamarg. Four days from Gujarat is not realistic once you account for the connecting flights at each end.

Is Kashmir suitable for elderly parents?

Srinagar and Pahalgam are comfortable. Gulmarg’s Gondola involves altitude — Phase 2 tops out near 3,950 m — and can cause breathlessness. If anyone in the group has a cardiac or respiratory condition, plan for Phase 1 only and tell the operator in advance so the day is paced properly.

Can we see snow in Kashmir in May?

Not walkable snow at Srinagar or Pahalgam. You can usually still reach snow at the top of the Gulmarg Gondola into May and sometimes June, and Sonamarg holds patches longer. If snow is the priority, travel between late December and February instead.

Is it better to fly to Srinagar or Jammu?

Fly to Srinagar. The road from Jammu is long, winding and prone to closure, and it turns a six-day holiday into an eight-day one for no gain unless you specifically want to travel that route.
