Saputara and Mount Abu get compared constantly, and the comparison is usually unhelpful, because they are not really alternatives. They are good in opposite seasons, sit at opposite ends of the state, and suit different groups.

Pick by what you actually want from the weekend and the choice becomes obvious.

The short version

Distance and getting there

Saputara

Gujarat’s only hill station, in the Dang district on the Maharashtra border, at about 1,000 m.

Mount Abu

Technically in Rajasthan, but functionally Gujarat’s hill station — the majority of visitors are Gujarati. Sits at about 1,220 m in the Aravallis.

The mirror image is exact: each is a comfortable half-day from one end of Gujarat and a slog from the other.

Season decides more than anything else

Saputara peaks in the monsoon

July to October is when Saputara is worth the drive. The hills are properly green, the waterfalls run, and the Saputara Monsoon Festival typically runs through this period with cultural programmes and food stalls.

Out of monsoon, Saputara is pleasant but modest. In summer it is warm and rather dry, and the thing people came for is absent.

Mount Abu peaks in winter

November to February is the window. Nights get genuinely cold and Mount Abu occasionally records temperatures near or below freezing — the only place in the region that does. That novelty is a large part of the appeal for Gujarati families.

The monsoon is green and atmospheric at Abu too, with the added benefit of far fewer visitors. Avoid May and June, when Gujarat’s heat pushes half the state up the hill at once and the town is overwhelmed.

What there is to do

Saputara — a comfortable day and a half

Saputara is small. Two nights is enough and one night is workable.

Mount Abu — a full two days

Two nights is right. Three if you want to walk the trails properly.

Cost, honestly

Both are inexpensive by any national standard, and the difference between them is smaller than the difference between a good and a bad hotel in either.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Saputara or Mount Abu?

Neither, in the abstract. Saputara is better in the monsoon and better from south Gujarat; Mount Abu is better in winter, better from Ahmedabad, and has more to see. Let the month and your starting point decide.

Is one night enough for Saputara?

From Surat, yes — leave early, see the lake and the ropeway on day one, waterfalls on day two. From Ahmedabad, two nights, or the drive dominates the trip.

Is Mount Abu in Gujarat?

No, it is in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan, close to the Gujarat border. It functions as Gujarat’s hill station because of its proximity to Ahmedabad and the number of Gujarati visitors.

Does it snow in Mount Abu?

Not meaningfully. Temperatures occasionally approach or dip below freezing and frost forms, which gets reported enthusiastically, but you should not travel expecting snow.
